"A Woman of Valor" from
Proverbs 31:10-31, is an important part of the Shabbat celebration
on friday night. It is usually sung before the blessing over wine,
and celebrates the hard work and good deeds of the women who serve
the family and community. This design takes the written text, and
illustrates each particular labor or attribute in careful detail.
For example, in "she eats not the bread of idleness,"
clouds of steam rise from the top of the pie, and at the bottom
of the foreground, one can see the toes, beak and eyes of the chicken
scratching for grain. The large, gold-colored lettering that runs
around the borders of the cover uses the beginning of the prayer-poem,
Lekah Dodi, which is sung in the synagogue
on friday night, and which compares God and Israel to a husband
