(Description beneath image)
Challah cover (1998). 100% cotton.
Pieced patchwork, with machine quilting and hand-stitched lettering.
In this design, the orange, red
and blue rays of a sixteen-pointed mariner's star float out from
a somber brown circle, which is in turn set against a brown and
black background reminiscent of a night sky. On the inside brown
border, I have stitched in Hebrew the words, "In honor of Shabbat
and the holidays." The outside border is made up of multicolored
fabric strips that incorporate the colors of the star, and bring
the eye back to the orange rays of the star at the center. The entire
piece is machine-quilted to show the wealth of detail and textures
on both the front and the brown reverse sides.
